One of the things I love most about Austria, are all the traditions and superstitions that are weaved into everyday life.

Rituals, both religious and Pagan, are still celebrated. There is a culture of pause, through the continued importance of Kurs, Thermen and one of the highest rates of Ferientage in the EU.

I have always thought the time between Christmas and New Year’s Eve', and the first few days of the New Year itself, were boring, dull and a little foggy. I didn’t know how to slow down, or want to look inward, but there was an unease about a time of year where this was not mandated, but you could feel it in the air.

Rest and self reflection made me nervous. Accepting and inviting accountability even more so.

When I learnt about these Rauhnaechte, I felt the pagan rituals and beliefs, about the sacredness of the time, and it’s relation to the spirit world, hit at what I’d always been feeling, but could never articulate.
